Empowerment and advocacy theory is a broad theoretical framework that embraces all aspects of client’s life, and seeks to aid clients in attaining power on decisions and actions in their own lives. Empowerment and advocacy theory has some attributes related to critical, feminist, and anti-discrimination theories.
First published in 1994, this book was hailed as a cutting-edge, theory-driven report from the front-line trenches in the battle for social justice. Both clinical and

This theory places emphasis on dysfunctional thought patterns that influence problematic behaviors — what we tell ourselves after an event. Activist groups use the term to rally behind different issues, while academic circles frequently cite the word in scholarly articles.
The empowerment theory gained legitimacy as a paradigm back in 1981 by Julian Rappaport who discussed this paradigm in his Presidential Address at the American Psychological Association. He stated, “Empowerment is the mechanism by which people, companies, and communities gain mastery over their lives” (Cummings pg.141). Empowerment research focuses on identifying assets and capabilities, instead of cataloging risk factors, and on exploring environmental influences of social problems instead of blaming victims. SOCIAL WORK The appropriation of power or 'empowerment' must be a major concern for social workers in all aspects of the practice of social work — whether individual, group or community. Though the term 'empowerment' is relatively recent and very catchy, its roots go back to the very begin nings of social work.
